What's New

This page will be used to tell what major changes have taken place, or what new taxa have been added.  I'm not going to bore you with reporting minor typographical changes, though, unless there's a huge volume of them.  For updates from 2000-2006, check this archive page.  If you'd like to know where I got some information, please contact me!
Since I don't usually post changes of classification, and I don't redo the entries on these update pages, you may run into cases where a name is no longer on the page I originally posted it at.  In such cases, the alphabetical index is your friend, hopefully.

7-25-2010: To continue with ceratopsids, Mojoceratops perifania of the LK of Alberta has been added, as well as a discussion on Triceratops vis-à-vis Torosaurus in the Triceratops entry.  Also, there is the inevitable sauropod, in this case Atsinganosaurus velauciensis from the LK of France.  There was additionally some cleanup on some dubious theropods ("Dryosaurus" grandis and "Laelaps" macropus) and ornithopods ("Cetiosaurus" brachyurus).

6-21-2010: So the book arrived, and I've been doodling together ceratopsian updates.  While quite a lot of text has changed, the most obvious changes are the seven additional taxa: Archaeoceratops yujingziensis from the EK of China; Coahuilaceratops magnacuerna, a chasmosaurine from the LK of Mexico; Diabloceratops eatoni, one of those newfangled centrosaurines with long brow horns, from the LK of Utah; Medusaceratops lokii, a chasmosaurine from the LK of Montana; Ojoceratops fowleri, a chasmosaurine from the LK of New Mexico;  Rubeosaurus ovatus, a centrosaurine from the LK of Montana; and Tatankceratops sacrisonorum, a chasmosaurine from the LK of South Dakota.  Finally, because no event is complete without a sauropod, there is the titanosauriform Fukuititan nipponensis from the EK of Japan.

6-5-2010: Things have piled up!  Additions this time include possible basal tetanuran Kayentavenator elysiae, from the EK of Arizona; derived non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroid Jeyawati rugoculus, from the LK of New Mexico; two new names for old species of Iguanodon, Barilium dawsoni and Hypselospinus fittoni, both from the EK of England (and if you're keeping score, that's six genera broken out of Iguanodon in the last five years, with these two joining Dakotadon, Dollodon, Mantellisaurus, and Owenodon); bagaceratopid-ish ceratopsian Ajkaceratops kozmai, from the LK of Hungary, becoming the first European ceratopsian to leave behind more than teeth; basal centrosaurine Sinoceratops zhuchengensis from the LK of China, becoming the first good ceratopsid from Asia; and some phylogenetic and taxonomic work with hadrosaurids, particularly Secernosaurus and Gryposaurus.  I know of the other eight or however many new ceratopsians, but my copy of the new horned dinosaur volume is on its way, and I'm waiting for it.

5-15-2010: Basal abelisauroid Austrocheirus isasii from the LK of Argentina and derived non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroid Glishades ericksoni from the LK of Montana have been added.  I've also fixed a few links.  Finally, if you're a follower of the Dinosaur Mailing List, you know that there has been some discussion of Ceratopsidae/Ceratopsinae and Hadrosauridae/Hadrosaurinae vis-a-vis the genera for which they were named.  If I come to the conclusion to change any of these names, I'm not going to change the url like I used to do, I'll just change the name at the top of the page.

4-9-2010: Basal tyrannosauroid Kileskus aristotocus, from the MJ of central Russia, and alvarezsaurid Xixianykus zhangi, from the LK of China, were added.  Also, I deleted my artwork and moved the Science Museum photos to the main image page.

3-27-2010: It's Basal Sauropodomorph day at Thescelosaurus!, with Ignavusaurus rachelis from the EJ of Lesotho and the more derived Seitaad ruessi from the EJ of Utah.  Also, there's the dromaeosaurid Linheraptor exquisitus, from the LK of China, but surely you've seen enough dromaeosaurids?

3-6-2010: While not a dinosaur, but a dinosauriform, the new silesaurid Asilisaurus kongwe from the MTr of Tanzania has been added, marking the first time I get to use "Anisian" in an entry.

2-28-2010: Here's something you don't see every day: a new sauropod with skull material.  That's Abydosaurus mcintoshi, late EK of Utah, here to make your acquaintance.  There's also a new troodontid, Xixiasaurus henanensis, from the LK of China.

2-6-2010: The last two weeks have been busy in the world of theropods, what with feather colors and a bushel of new coelurosaurs.  For additions, we have the tyrannosauroid Bistahieversor sealeyi of the LK of New Mexico; the early LJ Chinese alvarezsaur Haplocheirus sollers; eumaniraptoran Pneumatoraptor fodori from the LK of Hungary; the oviraptorid Banji long, from the LK of China; and trickling in from 2009, oviraptorosaur Luoyanggia liudianensis and sauropod Xianshanosaurus shijiagouensis from the early LK of China.

1-23-2010: We have today Jintasaurus meniscus, a non-hadrosaurid iguanodont from the EK of China, and Arkharavia hetereocoelica, a new LK Russian sauropod.

1-9-2010: It's the first update of the New Year, with Texacephale langstoni from the LK of Texas (although not much to say there, yet), and the unfortunate loss of the extinct Realm of Rubber Dinosaurs from the links.

12-19-2009: What does everyone's favorite dromaeosaurid holiday symbol Santa Claws have for us this year? (yes, awful pun, but don't forget my supervisor back in grad school was Karen Chin, a master of the pun)  It's not a full revision of North American "hypsilophodonts," or the long-awaited redescription of Allosaurus, but it's still pretty good.  For fans of basal dinosaurs, there is Tawa hallae from the LTr of New Mexico.  For fans of more derived theropods, there is Leshansaurus qianeiensis, a possible sinraptorid from the LJ of China.  For those who love "prosauropods," there is Massospondylus kaalae from the EJ of South Africa.  For those who like to see an old name pop back up, as well as those who appreciate an armored dinosaur, there is the return of Dyoplosaurus.  For anyone who likes basal hadrosaurid types, there is Tethyshadros insularis of the LK of Italy, liberated from unpublished limbo.  Finally, for the rest of us, there are a few more links, mostly in a new geology section and the dinosaur toy section.

11-28-2009: And for our next weekend update, there are old iguanodonts in new places, with Elrhazosaurus for Valdosaurus nigeriensis and Owenodon for Iguanodon hoggii.  There was also some movement in "Iguanodon" species, and since I was there, I opted to restore Camptosaurus prestwichii to Cumnoria and Dryosaurus lettowvorkbecki to Dysalatosaurus.  In addition, there is Cruxicheiros newmanorum, a basal tetanuran theropod from the MJ of England, and as usual some things that generally don't show, like adjusting ages on Tendaguru taxa.

11-14-2009: We have a new first dinosaur for the site's alphabet (note that the ever-popular Aachenosaurus has been omitted because it is not a dinosaur): Aardonyx celestae, a basal sauropomorph from the EJ of South Africa experimenting with quadrupedalism.  Also, Proceratosaurus has been banished moved to Tyrannosauroidea.

11-1-2009: Updated the pachycephalosaurids with regards to the news about Dracorex, Stygimoloch, and Pachycephalosaurus.  Also, unfortunately I had to take down several websites from my links due to the loss of Geocities, including Classifosauria, MESOZOIC DINOSAURS, and The Official Dino Land Website.

10-25-2009: The "Fruita Echinodon" has been freed, as Fruitadens haagarorum.  We've also got a new ankylosaurian, Tatankacephalus cooneyorum, from the EK of Montana.

10-18-2009: Early big tyrannosauroid Sinotyrannus kazuoensis, from the EK of China, has been added, and Tetanurae and Carnosauria have had major reshufflings with the unveiling of Neovenatoridae.

10-7-2009: Well, Thescelosaurus! has been now been on the Internet for 10 years.  I kept thinking Wednesday (today) was the 6th, but realized my mistake too late yesterday to do anything about it.  So, what to do to celebrate?  Um, I added that "s" to all the Ceratopsia/Ceratopsidae/Ceratopsinae/etc. pages.  When I started this place, I was a real purist.  Now it just looks like I'm trying very stubbornly to make a point.  I also added new tyrannosaurid species Alioramus altai and moved Anchiornis to Troodontidae.

9-19-2009: As we approach the last quarter of 2009, we see several new taxa: cerapodan Albalophosaurus yamaguichiorum from the EK of Japan; titanosaurian Barrosasaurus casamiquelai of the LK of Argentina; pocket tyrant Raptorex kriegsteini from the EK of China; and basal sauropod Spinophorosaurus nigerensis from the ?MJ of Niger. We also bid a fond farewell to Bugenasaura, sunk into Thescelosaurus.  (Giraffatitan was also formally split from Brachiosaurus, but I've had them separated for years)  On this page, I pulled the 2005-2006 updates to the archives.  The front page had a few changes as well, including a link to The Open Dinosaur Project, as well as reworking of the very first table (due to the sinking of Bugenasaura).  Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what the exclamation point in my title is for.

9-6-2009: EK Chinese dromaeosaurid Tianyuraptor ostromi and brachiosaurid Qiaowanlong kangxii were added, and I overhauled part of the links page.

8-2-2009: Arenysaurus ardevoli, a basal lambeosaurine from the end-K of Spain, has been added.

7-18-2009: New theropods Kemkemia auditorei (LK of Morocco) and Nothronychus graffami (LK of Utah) have been added.  Also, the alvarezsaurids now have their own page.

7-3-2009: A busy couple of days yields three new dinosaurs from the EK-LK boundary of Australia, and two new theropods from Mongolia.  The Australians are: Australovenator wintonensis, an allosauroid, Diamantinasaurus matildae, a derived titanosaurian, and Wintonotitan wattsi, a titanosauriform.  The Mongolians are Kol ghuva, an alvarezasaurid, and Zanabazar junior, a new home for an old species of the troodontid Saurornithoides.

6-20-2009: Here in the mid-month we get droopy-faced lambeosaurine Angulomastacator daviesi from the LK of Texas; the current media darling Limusaurus inextricabilis, a toothless ceratosaur with odd hands from the LJ of China; a new species for Dromomeron, D. gregorii; and a new species of Psittacosaurus, P. gobiensis (surprisingly, that species name hadn't been taken yet for that specious genus).

6-5-2009: "Chilantaisaurus" maortuensis becomes Shaochilong maortuensis, Asia's first carcharodontosaurid.

5-13-2009: "Ginnareemimus", one of our long-term nomina nuda, has been officially published as Kinnareemimus khonkaenensis, an ornithomimosaurian from the EK of Thailand.

4-23-2009: Nice to be able to update at will again.  Three new names just came down the pike, and because it's me and this is my site I choose to list the hadrosaurid/oid first (choose the ending that fits your conception of hadrosaur phylogeny and systematics).  Levnesovia transoxiana is a Bactrosaurus-like hadrosaur from the middle LK of Uzbekistan.  We also have two new theropods from the late EK of China, both of which sort out into intermediate positions in their respective groups: healthy-sized ornithomimosaurian Beishanlong grandis and long-snouted tyrannosauroid Xiongguanlong baimoensis.

4-20-2009: And no sooner are we up than we have two new names: titanosauriform Baotianmansaurus henanensis, from the LK of China, and basal neoceratopsian Helioceratops brachygnathus, from the middle K of China.

4-10-2009: Hey, communication is back on!  New address and what-have-you, eh?

Here's what has been getting stored up: Eomamenchisaurus yuanmouensis, a sauropod from the MJ of China; Loricatosaurus priscus, an Othnielosaurus-style replacement for Lexovisaurus; Dongyangosaurus sinensis, a titanosauriform from the early LK of China; Qingxiusaurus youjiangensis, a titanosaurian from the LK of China; Orkoraptor burkei, a maniraptoran from the LK of Argentina; Velociraptor osmolskae, a second species from the LK of China; Malarguesaurus florenciae, a titanosauriform from the LK of Argentina; Uberabatitan ribeiroi, a titanosaurian from the LK of Brazil; Albertonykus borealis, an alvarezsaurid from the LK of Alberta; Similicaudipteryx yixianenesis, a basal oviraptorosaurian from the EK of China; Tastavinsaurus sanzi, a titanosauriform from the Aptian of Spain; a new species of Stokesosaurus, S. langhami, from the LJ of England; Aerosteon riocoloradensis, a tetanuran from the LK of Argentina; Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai, a new name for the "unicorn" horned pachyrhinosaur from the LK of Alberta; Epidexipteryx hui, a little maniraptoran with odd strap-like feather things on its tail, from the LJ of China; Pitekunsaurus macayai, a titanosaurian from the LK of Argentina; Gobiceratops minutus, a bagaceratopid from the LK of Mongolia; Duriavenator hesperis, a new name for "Megalosaurus" hesperis; Skorpiovenator bustingorryi, an abelisaurid from the LK of Argentina; Austroraptor cabazai, a long-snouted short-armed 5-m-long dromaeosaurid from the LK of Argentina; Peloroplites cedrimontanus, a large nodosaurid from the EK of Utah; Anchiornis huxleyi, a borderline bird from the ?EK of China; Ceratonykus oculatus, an alvarezsaurid from the LK of Mongolia; Minotaurasaurus ramachandrani, an ankylosaurine from the LK of the Gobi Desert; Nedoceratops hatcheri, an overlooked replacement name for "Diceratops"; Daxiatitan binglingi, a basal titanosaurian from the EK of China; Panphagia protos, new basalmost sauropodomorph from the LTr of Argentina; Miragaia longicollum, a longnecked stegosaur from the LJ of Portugal; Shidaisaurus jinae, a tetanuran from the MJ of China; Hesperonychus elizabethae, a new tiny dromaeosaurid from the LK of Alberta; Adeopapposaurus mognai, a new massospondylid from the EJ of Argentina; Tianyulong confuciusi, a new fuzzy/bristly heterodontosaurid from the EK of China; Ruyangosaurus giganteus, a new sauropod from the early LK of China; updates of Abelisauridae, Ceratosauria, and Stegosauria; a swap of Torvosauridae for Megalosauridae; an overhaul of the time scale (especially pertinent at the LTr end, where the Norian gobbles up most of what had been thought of as Carnian time; what this means for the present is that I more or less translated all the Carnian specifications in the site to early Norian); new links for The Theropod Database and The Polyglot Paleontologist; and I removed the extinct Dino Land WebRing.

5-8-2008: In a bit of a hurry, as in a short time I will be unable to publish updates until August (and I may be at a new address anyway); however, I do have two new dinosaurs from the LK of Argentina: Macrogryphosaurus gondwanicus, a basal iguanodontian, and Muyelensaurus pecheni, a titanosaur.

4-21-2008: Having a bit a trouble with updating, but we can still have fun with iguanodonts.  There's a new species of Camptosaurus, C. aphanoecetes, for the Dinosaur National Monument specimens, and a new listing for C. depressus, as Planicoxa depressa.

4-5-2008: In the "oh, yeah, I can put those up now" department, we have old/new iguanodonts Dakotadon lakotaensis (EK of South Dakota, formerly Iguanodon lakotaensis) and Dollodon bampingi (EK of Belgium, formerly the "I. mantelli" gracile Bernissart iguanodont), and LTr British Asylosaurus yalensis (formerly "those Thecodontosaurus bones at Yale").

3-1-2008: On the heels of finally switching to Richardoestesia, I made some overdue additions, adding Razanandrongobe sakalavae, a possible theropod from the MJ of Madagascar, and Suchosaurus cultridens and girardi, two probable spinosaurids from the EK of Europe.

2-26-2008: "Diceratops" and "Microceratops" have received new names, Diceratus and Microceratus respectively.  I also fixed the age of Cryolophosaurus, and, uh, yeah, and Ricardoestesia was revised to Richardoestesia

2-11-2008: Slow January, and then in the first couple of weeks of February we get a lot of new information.  There's possibly the last name from 2007, Chinese EK ankylosaurid Crichtonsaurus benxiensis, and a quartet to usher in 2008: carcharodontosaurid Eocarcharia dinops and abelisaurid Kryptops palaios, both from the EK of Niger; and lambeosaurine Sahaliyania elunchunorum and hadrosaurine Wulagasaurus dongi, both from the LK of China.  I also split Caenagnathus from Chirostenotes.  As usual, I'm also sitting on a couple of things.

12-26-2007: Now for an experiment: I updated with EK Chinese basal titanosauriform Dongbeititan dongi.  Updates often equal "new name or new information appears almost instantly after I update, which I then sit on a few days before adding."  Does it work this time, too?

12-16-2007: The new JVP brings forth Velafrons coahuilensis, a new lambeosaurine from the LK of Mexico; Carcharodontosaurus iguidensis, from the early LK of Niger; and new information on Styracosaurus

12-9-2007: Glacialisaurus hammeri, an EJ Antarctic sauropodomorph, has been added.  Additionally, I finally added the seven genera from Pakistan that first came to wide attention this spring.  Frankly, I'm not sure what to make of them, and the sauropods are classified under an odd arrangement of "Balochisauridae (saltasaurid)" and "Pakisauridae (titanosaurid)", but here they are: ?titanosaurian sauropods Balochisaurus malkani, Brohisaurus kirthari, Khetranisaurus barkhani, Marisaurus jeffi, Pakisaurus balochistani, and Sulaimanisaurus gingerichi, all LK except for the LJ Brohisaurus; and Vitakridrinda sulaimani, an LK abelisaurid.  I don't have much to say (yet), so they are slim entries.
I do know about recent work on iguanodonts, but it's a preprint, so I'm waiting.

11-18-2007: It's been interesting for weird sauropods as of late.  We have the bizarre new Xenoposeidon proneneukos from the EK of England and new information on Nigersaurus and its distorted, "Persistance of Memory"-esque skull.  On the ornithischian side of the aisle, Craspedodon may not be the inoffensive iguanodontian it was long thought to be.

11-2-2007: Since I was around and had some time, I decided to skip the long update gap and added the two new EJ Indian sauropodomorphs, little Pradhania gracilis and big Lamplughsaura dharmaramensis.

10-31-2007: As intended back on the 18th, I reorganized the neotheropods and basal tetanurans (thanks for the Cryolophosaurus article help, Marcel!).

10-18-2007: Some new stuff: the LK hadrosaurid from Utah, Gryposaurus monumentensis, plus a redo of Hadrosauridae; new LK Chinese dromaeosaurid Luanchuanraptor henanensis; and LK Albertan ceratopsine  Eotriceratops xerinsularis.  There are also new data on Cryolophosaurus and fellow basal theropods, but I don't have the paper.  Also, I should really revise the ages for the Dinosaur Park/Horseshoe Canyon animals at some point.  Plus, I'm a coauthor on a description of a new Arctic Cretaceous sponge.

10-3-2007: Mostly updates to the base of the ornithischian tree this time; Thescelosaurus! is eight years old this month (about a week from now, actually), and there was some stuff there that apparently hadn't been adjusted the whole time.  Anyway, the line between basal ornithopod and non-ornithopod is getting fuzzier and fuzzier, so there may certainly be inconsistencies.

9-21-2007: Too many new things, too little time.  This time around, there's LK Argentine alvarezsaurid Achillesaurus manazzonei, EJ Moroccan abelisauroid Berberosaurus liassicus, and LK North American leptoceratopsid Cerasinops hodgkissi

9-12-2007: I was actually trying to upload all through August, but was having problems.  Therefore, there's another backlog.  We have EK Texan "brachiosaur" Paluxysaurus jonesi, giant LK Argentine titanosaurian Futalognkosaurus dukei, LK Chinese basal lambeosaurine Nanningosaurus dashiensis, EK Chinese large basal therizinosaurian Suzhousaurus megatherioides, tiny LK Mongolian basal dromaeosaurid Mahakala omnogovae, and new species Yunnanosaurus youngi (first Middle Jurassic "prosauropod").

7-29-2007: Fell a bit behind; we've got new sauropods in Amargatitanis macni and Nopscaspondylus alarconensis (LK of Argentina), stegosaur Jiangjunosaurus junggarensis (LJ of China), nodosaurids Zhejiangosaurus lishuiensis (LK of China) and Zhongyuansaurus luoyangensis (K of China), and giant hadrosaurid Zhuchengosaurus maximus (EK-LK boundary of China).

7-21-2007: Lagerpeton-like basal dinosauromorph Dromomeron romeri, from the LTr of New Mexico and other scenic southwestern points, has been added.

7-3-2007: Not a whole lot going on, just some more hadrosaur tidying, and an update to the Theropod Database link.

6-16-2007: So, yeah, a bunch of new names came down the pipe just as I was making the last update.  You get Eocursor parvus, the most-completely known Triassic ornithischian (and some rejiggering of basal Ornithischia), a new species of Psittacosaurus (P. major), Gigantoraptor erlianensis, a new giant basal oviraptorid from the LK of China, consolidation in favor of Majungasaurus and Kritosaurus, some work on the Lambeosaurinae tree, and updates to the Fauna page, including the Lower Elliot Formation and Kirtland Formation.

6-10-2007: Huanghetitan ruyangensis, a macronarian sauropod from the K of China with a really deep chest, has been added.  Also, note that the Theropod Database is currently off-line.

5-28-2007: Australodocus bohetii, a new Tendaguru diplodocine, and Aeolosaurus colhuehuapensis, a new species of the saltasaurid Aeolosaurus, were added.

4-8-2007: It was a week or so ago that everyone else noticed, but Aniksosaurus darwini has been published, and I revamped basal Sauropodomorpha and Dromaeosauridae.  Oh, and Krzyzanowskisaurus and Azendohsaurus have been cast out.

3-29-2007: Pantydraco caducus, a new name for Thecodontosaurus caducus, was added, and I tweaked Archaeopteryx.

3-22-2007: The "burrowing hypsilophodont", Oryctodromeus cubicularis, has been added.  Go hypsilophodonts!

3-18-2007: Beware the...St. Patrick's Day?  Four new theropods came to my attention yesterday: Lophostropheus airelensis, a new name for Liliensternus airelensis; Sinocalliopteryx gigas, a large Yixian compsognathid; Shanag ashile, a dromaeosaurid from the EK of Mongolia; and Urbacodon itemirensis, a troodontid from the Cenomanian (LK) of Uzbekistan.

2-25-2007: Albertaceratops nesmoi, a new centrosaurine with long brow horns, has been published, and Chingshakiangosaurus has been updated.

1-27-2007: I changed Chasmosaurinae back to Ceratopsinae.
